Referee Marking

Guidelines for Marking Referees by Club Officials – Mark by Mark Breakdown

PERFORMANCE                                                    DESCRIPTION        MARK

Guide Comment

EXCELLENT

A faultless performance                                                                 Excellent                            91-100

First class match control                                                                Outstanding                   81-90

ABOVE AVERAGE

Worthy of consideration for promotion                             Very Good                           71-80

Above average                                                                                      Good                                     61-70

AVERAGE

Only just above average                                                                 Adequate                          51-60

As competent as expected for this level                             Fair                                        41-50

BELOW AVERAGE

Lacking in match control                                                               Weak                                    31-40*

Severely lacking in match control                                           Very Weak                          21-30*

Unsatisfactory – No match control and below

The standard expected                                                                   Poor                                     11-20*

Unacceptable low standard                                                        Very Poor                          0-10*

Markings endorsed by an *asterisk require a report to be sent to the League Secretary within three (3) days of the match being played, Rule 9d applies.

The use of the 100 mark scale in this way will allow the distinction to be made more readily between Referees who are clearly less than adequate to the task and those who are competent or average, and those who show greater potential and who should ultimately be considered for promotion.

Note to all secretaries – It is intended that the 100 mark scale for qualified Referees will assist in the overall improvement of these officials. Any Club or non-qualified Referee who takes charge of a match must be given due respect to the situation, see Rule 17c, yet still be marked according to the guidelines for marking.

Referee Guidelines

The Marking of Club Assistant Referees

In all instances where an individual club linesman officiates for the complete match please mark this official as per the standard format for the marking of Referees as previously stated.

The Marking of Substitutes Acting as Assistant Referees

The Northants Sunday Conference permits the use of team substitutes to act as linesman in all their League and Cup matches, except where the League has previously notified the Match Referee of the appointment of neutral Assistant Referees.

In this latter instance where a substitute(s) has acted as a linesman it is important for the Referee to mark the overall standard of the linesman for the Club, ignoring the individual naming of the linesman, unless so desired, using the previously listed Referee standard format for marking.

Fair Play

Fair Play Award

Referees are asked to mark, out of 10, their assessment of Fair Play of both competing teams both on and off the field of play whilst they are in control of the match. The following guidelines are provided to assist referees in their assessment and to ensure that the Northants Sunday Conference Football League continues to improve the standard of sportsmanship shown as an exemplar to others.

1.             At the beginning at end of each match were you correctly welcomed and thanked

by both teams?                       =              plus 1 point to each team

2.             During the match were your decisions accepted without undue dissent by both teams?                                                      =              plus 1 point to each team

3.             Did both teams act in a friendly manner towards each other?                                                                     =              plus 1 point to each team

4.             Did you come off the field of play feeling you enjoyed the game and would Referee either of the teams again?                    =              plus 1 point to each team

5.             Did either team show unnecessary acts of gamesmanship towards the other, either verbally or physically?                             =              minus 2 points to each team

6.             Where there any cautions / sending off offences not accepted by either team therefore bringing the team into disrepute?

=              minus 3 points to each team

7.             Did you come off the field of play feeling you would NEVER* Referee either both or one of these teams again?                     =              minus 4 points to each team

*In this instance the League requires a Match Report Card or separate note to be sent to the General Secretary which will, in each instance, be reported to the Management Committee to review for possible disciplinary action as deemed necessary against the offending Club(s).
